Letter Ilma to Sister Freda

23 The College

April 6th 48

My dearest Free

Rather soon to be wishing you many Happy Returns old bean – but have two reasons for doing so. Am expecting to go to Joan’s quite soon – no 7 on the way & yesterday I had a letter from Rob saying he has not heard from me since Sep: I cannot understand it & I am quite worried because he thinks I am cross with him. So with this I am sending a letter – will you please post it. I cannot think what else to do. Well, you see where I am – have only been here 3 weeks – but the house was given me in Dec: I was then with Billo – she was in the nursing home with a threatened mis-carriage so I stayed there until after Xmas (perhaps you know she now has another son – 3 weeks old) Then I went to Ashwater & packed up – just got my furniture & goods here when I get a wire from Greet. She was very sadly & soon after I got to Ruislip she went into Hospital for an operation – a nasty affair – the womb stitched in place & she was there nearly a month. I had Cecil & two children (the baby girl – 18 months is lovely) the other two boys were with Cecil’s sister. When I came away Greet was getting strong & well & I felt I needed a rest & some peace before going to Joan! I like it here very much – every one is friendly & nice & I am within easy reach of all the family & quite near all old friends. I go to Hungerford on the bus quite often & Dulcie & the children come over here. I saw Maggie Newhook the other day – she enquired after you all & I am going there to tea one day to see Bob – neither of them are married & they still live in the school house. Mildred & Daisy came to see me last week. Daisy makes her head quarters at Bradfield but travels around visiting most of the time. I did that for more than a year but I felt I wanted to settle in a home of my own – it is very strange to be alone. I miss the girls & their children but I think I shall be happy when I am used to it – but I cannot forget why I am here. Bubble’s baby Susan is very sweet. Bub makes a good mother & Ken’s little boy is a real Spackman full of mischieve & curly like Rob. I had promised to keep house for Billo when the babe came but was with G who needed help more as Billo has a very good maid & her children quite able to do for themselves. Clara has not been at all well. I am hoping she will come here for a real rest when I get back from Joan’s – she works so hard & her poor legs are dreadful. She has had shingles too. I have not heard from Olive since Xmas. I think I have
