Letter Ilma to Daughter Phyllis

22 Froxfield College

Dec: 14th 62

My dearest Phyll & Tony

Many thanks for long newsy letters. I had a lovely birthday mail & that reminds me to wish you Tony many happy returns of the 29th. I have just written to Rob for the 27th. So many air mail letters to get off this week. Now, my dears I hope you will spend a very happy Xmas. I shall be thinking of you all – last year, Phyll you were busy preparing for the trip to E. I wish you were doing so again & could bring with you some warm sunshine. We are having dreadful weather & worst of all freezing fog which makes travelling very dangerous. I have not been out for some weeks but quite happy & comfortable with a nice fire, TV & various cups of tea. That is how I shall spend Christmas, of course all the girls have asked me to join them & do not like the idea of me being alone but I really do not mind. Joan & Bub usually phone me that morn – so I know I am not forgotten & my thoughts are with them all – especially of the happy years at Pigeon House. Last week I was without a fire for 3 days waiting for the sweep – then he turned up one afternoon – I was so glad to see him – I forgot to tell him off!! Mrs Basham will be away for a week or two & I am sorry to say she is leaving 23 in Feb: to live with her daughter in Scotland. I shall miss her very much. Where is Diane? I think you said she was in Geneva some months ago. I hope you will be able to visit Aunt Olga during the holiday – my love to her & perhaps you will be seeing Rob & talk over your visit here. Everyone very well in Australia. I am sorry Dulcie is not coming over so soon as she thought. Mary, her elder daughter is expecting a baby in Feb: that will make 5 great grand children – Phenie’s second baby was christened some time ago. There were 30 at the christening tea & it was a bitterly cold day. It is only 2.30pm but nearly dark. I think we are going to have more snow. Mrs B has gone to Newbury. I will have a boiling kettle ready for some tea when she returns about 4oc. Ken & family are going to spend Xmas Day with Tony Patterson. Renie is expecting James & the boys there for a short holiday. Perhaps you will see Freda. She will be glad of a rest after so much illness during the term. Are you still looking for another flat? I am glad John and Eric are getting on well. I have some lovely photos from Australia. Ken looks so fat & well but he says he puffs & blows like Dr Pat! Lots of love to you all – a big hug & kiss for you my dear & a Very Happy New Year from Mother
