David Hazell of Wantage - His Will - 4 March 1819

This is the last Will and Testament of me David
Hazell the elder of Wantage in the County of Berks Clothier and Farmer which I hereby
make publish and declare in manner and form following/ that is to say/ First I desire
that all my just debts funeral and Testamentary Expenses be fully paid and satisfied
I give devise and bequeath unto my dear Wife Sarah for and during the term of her natural life the use and occupation of certain parts of my house and premises wherein
I now dwell/ that is to say/ the front room or parlour next to Priors Road the pantry
thereto adjoining the little room on the north side of the parlour and the Chamber
and Closet over the parlour together with the little Garden lying at the East end of my
dwellinghouse and also the use and enjoyment of all and singular my household Goods
and Furniture plate Linen and China and from and immediately after the decease of my
said Wife I give and bequeath the same household Goods and furniture plate linen
and China unto my three Sons William Hazell David Hazell and James Smith Hazell
to be equally divided between them share and share alike Also I give and bequeath
unto my said Son William Hazell for his own absolute use and benefit All my
Brewing Utensils Barrels and Fixtures which may be in or about my dwellinghouse
and Premises and all timber cut down and Boards sawed out or other Articles for
building which may be lying near the Sawpit at the time of my decease Also I
give unto my said Wife for her own use All my Stock of fire wood and coals which
I may have at the time of my decease Also I give and bequeath unto my two Sons
William Hazell and Jonathan Hazell the Sum of One thousand and seven hundred
pounds three per cent Consolidated Bank Annuities now standing in my name
transferrable at the Bank of England Upon Trust to pay unto or permit and suffer my
said Wife to receive the interest dividends and proceeds thereof for and during the term
of her natural life for her own use and benefit And from and immediately after the
decease of my said wife then Upon further trust to sell and dispose of the said One
thousand and seven hundred pounds Bank Annuities and divide the produce thereof to
and amongst them my said Sons William and Jonathan and all other my Children
equally share and share alike and in case either of them shall happen to die before
his or her share will become payable then I direct that the share of hi or her
dying shall go and be paid to his or her Executors or Administrators Also I give and
bequeath unto my said Son William Hazell All that my leasehold messuages or
Tenement Workshops Buildings Gardens Orchards and Meadow or pasture Ground and premises
called or known by the name of pryors Head? and which ere my late Fathers and
now in my occupation situate lying and being in the Township of Wantage
aforesaid with the rights members and Appurtanences thereto belonging/ subject nevertheless
to the residence of my said Wife in part of the said messuage or Tenament and premises
during her life only to hold the same subject as aforesaid unto him my said son William Hazell his Executors Administrators
and Assigns for and during all the Estate term and interest which I may have therein
at the time of my decease Also I give unto my said Son William all my working
Tools and implements of every description in the Clothing Business for his own use
absolutely Also I give and devise unto my said Son Jonathan Hazell All those my
freehold Messuages or Tenaments with the Gardens and Appurtanences thereto
belonging situate on the North side of the Church Yard in Wantage aforesaid in
the several occupations of John Hobbs Simeon Lee Elizabeth Gregory and Stockling?
and which premises I purchased of Mary Butler Spinster To hold the same unto and
to the use of him my said Son Jonathan Hazell his heirs and Assigns for ever
Alsi I give and devise unto my Son David Hazell all those my four freehold

Cottages or Tenements situate in Wallingford Street in Wantage aforesaid which
I purchased of Joseph Stevens with the Appertanences thereto belonging To hold the
same unto him my said Son David Hazell his heirs and assigns for ever Also I give unto my said Son David Hazell All that my leasehold Spinninghouse
Garden and premises situate in Wallingford Street aforesaid together with the small
Allotment of Arable Land lying near the Manor Farm in Wantage aforesaid and
which I hold by lease for lives? granted to me by the Governors of Wantage Town
Lands To hold the same unto him my said Son David Hazell his Executors
Administrators and Assigns for and during all the Estate Term? and Interest which
I may have therein at the time of my decease Also I give and devise unto my Son
James Smith Hazell All those my three Acres of Freehold Arable Land/ be the same
more or less/ lying in Long Platt Field in Wantage aforesaid and which were devised to
me by my late Father and are now in my own occupation and also the Barn
and other Buildings standing thereon with the appurtenances thereto belonging To
hold the same unto and to the use of him my said Son James Smith Hazell his
heirs and Assigns for ever Alsi i give and devise unto and to the use of my said Son
James Smith Hazell his heirs and Assigns All that half part of my Copyhold
Allotment of Arable Land/ which I lately purchased of Mrs Sarah Walnot?/ lying on the
South Side of Long Platt in Wantage aforesaid and adjoining to the three Acres of
freehold Arable land lastly hereinbefore devised to him Also i give and devise unto
my said Son David Hazell his heirs and Assigns All that the remaining half
part of the said Copyhold Allotment of Arable Land and which lies to the north
side of Long Platt aforesaid Also I give and bequeath unto my said Son James
Smith Hazell All my Term and Interest in a certain lease lately granted to me
by the Governors of the Town Lands of Wantage of their Land in Wantage aforesaid
which I may have at the time of my decease Also I give and bequeath unto my
daughter Mary the Wife of John Robins of West Hanney Yeoman the Sum of
three hundred and eighty pounds of lawful English money unto my daughter
Peggy the Wife of James Sims of Brentford the Sum of two hundred pounds of like
money To my daughter Sarah the wife of Richard Goff of Wantage Clothier the Sum
of two hundred pounds of like money To my daughter Elizabeth Ann the wife of
Charles Liddiard of Wantage Grocer the Sum of three hundred and eighty pounds of like
money To my said son Jonathan Hazell the Sum of one hundred pounds of like money
To my said Son David Hazell the Sum of three hundred and eighty pounds of
like money and To my said Son James Smith Hazell the sum of three hundred
and eighty pounds of like money All which said several legacies I direct
shall be paid to them my said Daughters and Sons respectively their respective
Executors Administrators and Assigns by my Executors hereinafter named within
one year next after my decease but without interest for the same in the mean
time Also I give and bequeath unto my Grand daughter Sarah Sims the legacy or
Sum of One hundred pounds of like money to be paid to her by my Executors at
the expiration of twelve Calendar months next after my decease but without any interest
for the same in the mean time And subject to and charged with the payment of
the eight several legacies hereinbefore bequeathed and my just debts funeral and
Testamentary Expenses I give devise and bequeath unto my two Sons William
and Jonathan their heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns All the rest and
residue of my Real Estate and also all the residue and remainder of my money
Securities for money monies in the public funds and other my personal Estate
and Effects whatsoever and wheresoever of which I may die seized possessed of
intitled unto To hold the same/ subject and charged as aforesaid/ unto them my
said Sons William and Jonathan their heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns
respectively as Tenants in common and not as joint Tenants And I do hereby
nominate constitute and appoint my said Sons William Hazell and Jonathan
Hazell joint Executors of this my last Will and Testament And lastly I do hereby
revoke and make void all other Wills and Testaments by me at any time
heretofore made provided always and it is my Will and I do hereby []
declare and direct that the provision hereinbefore made for my said wife shall be
accepted by her in full satisfaction of and for all dower and thirds which she

can or may have or claim out of my real Estates at Common Law In Testimony
whereof I the said David Hazell the Testator have to this my last Will and Testament
contained in four sheets of paper to the first three sheets thereof set my hand and
to this the fourth and last sheet thereof set my hand and seal this fourth day
of March in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and nineteen David Hazell
Signed sealed published and declared by the said David Hazell the Testator
as and for his last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in his presence
at his request and in the presence of each other have subscribed or names as
witnesses thereto Carew Packer Richard Freaker Wm Davies of Wantage

This is a Codicil to be annexed to and taken as part of the last
Will and Testament of me David Hazell the elder of Wantage in the County of Berks
Farmer and Clothier bearing date the fourth day of March one thousand eight
hundred and nineteen I give and bequeath the following legacies or Sums of money
in addition to what I have before given and bequeathed in and by my said Will/ that
is to say/ I give and bequeath unto my dear Wife Sarah the Sum of one hundred
pounds of lawful British money for her own use absolutely unto my Son William
Hazell the Sum of one hundred pounds of like money unto my daughter Mary the
wife of Mr John Robins the sum of twenty pounds of like money And unto my
daughter Elizabeth Ann the Wife of Mr Charles Liddiard the Sum of twenty pounds of
like money All which several legacies I direct to be paid immediately after my decease
and lastly I do hereby also nominate and appoint my Son David Hazell Executor of
my said Will jointly with my other two Sons William and Jonathan Hazell And
I do hereby ratify and confirm my said Will in all the other particulars thereof
In witness whereof I the said David Hazell the Testator have to this Codicil set my
hand and seal this twenty eighth day of November in the Year of Our Lord one
thousand eight hundred and twenty three David Hazell Signed sealed published
and declared by the said Testator David Hazell as and for a Codicil to be annexed
to hist last Will and Testament and to be taken as part thereof in the presence of
us Wm Davies of Wantage John Bury and Thomas Capel

Proved at London with a Codicil 14th September 1825 before the Worshipful Jspe Addams Doctor of Law and Surrogate by the Oaths of William Hazell and Jonathan Hazell the Sons and Executors named in the Will and David Hazell the Son also and Executor named in the Codicil to whom Administration was granted having been first sworn duly to Administer
