of me John Slade of Aston Upthorpe in the Parish of Blewberry in the County of Berks
Gentleman First I direct all my just debts and funeral and testamentary expenses to be
paid and satisfied I give and devise unto my Wife Elizabeth Deborah Slade another
assigns for her Life all that my messuage or tenement together with the Orchard
Garden and Appurtenances thereunto adjoining and belonging situate lying and being
at Aston Upthorpe aforesaid called Edlins? and from and after the decease of my said wife
I give and devise the same unto my sons Leonard Slade and Robert Vincent Slade their heirs
and aassigns to hold to him my said sons Leonard Slade and Robert Vincent Slade their heirs and assigns for ever as tenants in common and not as joint tenants I give and bequeath
unto my said Wife Elizabeth Deborah Slade and her asaigns for and during the tterm of
her natural life such part and parts of my household goods and furniture plate linen
china and implements of household as she shall [[] and [] and as may be
sufficient to furnisg the said messuage or tenement and premises called Edlins and I
direct that as soon as may be after my decease an Inventory and valuation shall be
made of such household goods furniture and effects so be taken by my said Wife and that
she my said Wife shall sign the same with an engagement or undertaking for the
delivery? thereof by her executors or admons at her decease to my executors herein
after named ar the survivors or survivor of them reasonable and wear thereof
excepted ot to account for the value thereof and from and immediately after the decease
of my said wife the said household goods furniture and effects or the amount in value
thereof shall sink into and form part of my residuary estate and as to all and
singular my messuages farms lands tenements heredits and premises monies
securities for money and all the rest Residue and remainder of my estate and
effects whatsoever and wheresoever as well real as personal and of what nature
or kind soever I give devise and bequeath the same unto my son Leonard Slade and
my friends William Sellwood late of Brightwell in the County of Berks but now of
Hermitage in the same County Gentleman and Thomas Greenwood of the Market Place
Wallingford in the said County of Berks Esquire their heirs executors admons and assigns
to hold to them the said Leonard Slade William Sellwood and Thomas Greenwood their heirs
executors admons and asigns according to the nature or quality of the said several and
respective estates upon the several trusts and to and for the several ends intents and purposes
hereinafter mentioned expressed and declared of and concerning the same that is to say
Upon trust that they my said trustees and the survivors and survivor of them their and
his heirs executors admons or assigns do and shall make sale and absolutely dispose of all
and singular the said messuages farms lands tenements hereditaments and premises as such?
and in such manner as they my said trustees or the survivors or survivor of them shall in
their or his discretion think proper and convert into moneyt all such part or parts of my
estate and effects as shall not consist of money and get in and service all and every debt
and debts sum and sums of money as may be but owing and belonging to me at my
decease and do and shall convey assign and assure the same messuages farms lands
tenements hereditaments and premises unto the purchaser or purchasers thereof his
her or their heirs executors admons or assigns or as he she or they shall direct or appoint
and do and shall stand possessed of the money to arise by such sale and to be begotten in
and secured? and all and singular pther my residuary estate and effects In trust after
payment of all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses to lay out and invest aassigns
sufficient sum or sums of money to answer and pay to my daughter Jane Slade an
annuity or annual sum of forty pounds by equal quarterly payments during her life the
first payment to begin and be made at the expiration of one Calendar month next after
my decease and also to answer and pay unto my servant William Kirkpatrick the weekly
sum of seven shillings during his life to be paid to him on every Monday Morning the first
payment to begin and be made on the Monday next after my decease and I hereby give
and bequeath the said annuity or annual sum of forty pounds to my said daughter
Jane Slade and the said weekly sum of seven shillings to the said William Kirkpatrick
accordingly and upon trust to pay the following Legacies or sums of money that is to say
to my daughter Mary the Wife of Thomas Bryan the sum of five hundred pounds to my
daughter Martrha the Wife of Thomas Axford thesum of five hundred pounds to my
daughter Charlotte the Wife of Thomas Thorpe the sum of five hundred pounds to my
daughter Letitia Slade the sum of five hundred pounds to my daughter Amelia
the Wife of William Thorpe thesum of five hundred pounds to my son John Slade
two hundred pounds to my son Henry Slade one hundred pounds to my son Frederick Slade
three hundred pounds to my son Septimus Slade two hundred pounds and to my son Joseph
Slade three hundred pounds all which Legacies or sums of money I direct shall become
vested in the several Legatees their respective executors admons and assigns
immediately after my decease but the same shall not be paid until the expiration of
two years afterwards but without interest in the meantime and to my friends the said
William Sellwood and Thomas Greenwood for the trouble they may have in the execution
of this my Will the Sum of nineteen pounds and nineteen shillings each and upon trust
to pay and divide the residue and remainder of such monies and all my residuary
estate and effects unto and between my said sons Leonard Slade and Robert Vincent
Slade equally share and share alike their respective heirs executors admons and
assigns Provided always and it is my Will and I do hereby declare that the receipt
and receipts of my said son Leonard Slade and the said William Sellwood & Thomas
Greenwood or the survivors or survivor of them shall be a good and sufficient
discharge and good and sufficient discharges for thge purchase money to arise from the
sale of any part or parts of my estate and effects or for so much thereof as in such
receipt or receipts shall be expressed or acknowledged to be received and that such
purchaser or purchasers after such receipt or receipts given shall not be obliged to see
to the application of the purchase money or any part thereof or be answwerable or
accountable for the misapplication or non application thereof and that they my said
trustees or the survivors or survivor of them shall not be answerable or accountable the
one for the other or others of them or for the arts deeds receipts neglects or defaults
of the other of them but each & every of them for his own separate deeds receipts neglects or defaults
only nor for any more money or effects than they shall respectively actually
receive or shall come to their hands respectively by virtue of this my Will
notwithstanding they or either of them may join in any receipt or receipts for the rate
of conformity and that it shall and may be lawful to and for my said trustees to
decuct satisfy and pay themselves and himself respectively and to allow his and
their cotrustees and cotrustee all such costs charges damages and expenses as they
or he shall severally and respectively incur sustain expend or be put unto in or
about the execution of the trusts powers and authorities hereby in them reposed
or in relation thereto and lastly I hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said
son Leonard Slade and my friends the said William Sellwood and Thomas
Greenwood Executors of this my will and hereby revoking all former and
other wills by me at any time heretofore made do declare this only to be
my last Will and Testament I witness whereof I the said John Slade the
testator have to the two first sheets of this my last Will and Testament contained

The greatest part is Tithe Free and exonorated from Land Tax: the Poor Rates are remarkably low. On the 23rd day of July 1833, at Three o'clock, unless previously disposed of by private Contract, of which due notice will be given.
All that superior Freehold Estate, situate in the Hamlet of Upthorpe in the parish of Blewberry. Late the Property and Residence of John Slade Esq deceased; consisting of
400 Acres, 2 Roods, 23 Poles of Arable,
138 Acres, 1 Rood, 3Pls of Meadow & Pasture,
And 332 Acres, 3 Roods, 19 Poles of Down Land,
A substantially built Dwelling House, and Homestead, with Field Barns, Yards, &c well arranged for the Farming Business, with good garden and orchards, also a Bakehouse, with convenient Buildings, and Ten Cottages.
The greatest part is Tithe Free and exonorated from Land Tax: the Poor Rates are remarkably low. It is an excellent Corn and Stock Farm, on the Turnpike Road, from Wantage to London, 4 miles from Wallingford, 10 miles from Wantage and Abingdon, 14 from Reading and 4 from Ilsley. The estate is well stocked with Timber which is to be taken at a valuation, and immediate possession will be given. Genuine and well selected Live and Dead Farming Stock, Cart Horses, Colts, Nags, 500 Sheep, Store Pigs, Broad and Narrow Wheel Waggons, Carts, 2 Neat Gigs, a few Lots of Household Furniture, some well seasoned Timber and Ash Planks, and a Bond for £200, secured on the Tolls of the Turnpike Road, leading from Harwell to Streatley, Berks; by order of the Executors of John Slade, Esq, deceased.
To Be Sold By Auction (Without reserve.) by Doe & Nalder, On Tuesday, March 31st, and Wednesday, April 1st, 1835 at 11 o'clock precisely each day, at Thorpe Farm.
The Live Stock consists of 15 excellent cart horses, two cart colts; capital nag (in or out of harness); 308 six tooth southdown sheep; 100 couples; 100 tegs; 37 store pigs; capital broad wheel and 5 narrow wheel waggons; 3 broad wheel and 2 narrow wheel dung carts; market cart; 1 broad and 1 narrow wheel timber bobs; 6 ploughs; 9 harrows; drag; three furrow beans or pease drill; 2 single ditto; land presser; rollers; thrashing machine; winnowing fan; haymaking machine; harness for 15 horses; plough and other harness; sheep cages; hurdles, and troughs; ladders; sack carts; seed lips; cart lines; 5 nine stone rick staddles; several lots of well seasoned timber;; ash planks; box of carpenters' tools; patent & other butter churns; milk leads; washing machine; poultry; neat gig; ditto and harness; and a few lots of household furniture; and a bond for £200, secured on the tolls of the turnpike road, leading fron Harwell to Streatly.
