Death of a brother | George Green 1 March 1938 (Age 69) Market Harborough, Leicestershire, England Source: Newspaper Citation details: Market Harborough Advertiser and Midland Mail Date of entry in original source: 4 March 1938 Text: Death of Ald Geo Green JP of Market Harborough
Well known Public and Business Man.
We much regret to have to record the death of Alderman George Green JP of High Street, Market Harborough, which occured shortly after midnight on Tuesday (March 1st). He had been in failing health for some time, but his marvellous powers of recuperation which had brought him out and about again after previous short illnesses led his friends to hope that he would pull through again. This time, however, it was not to be and the sad news met townspeople on Tuesday morning that one of the most familiar figures in the district had passed away during the night.
Mr Green was in his 83rd year- he would have been 83 next Monday. He leaves one son, Mr George Green. His wife predeceased him in 1929.
To write about Mr Green's record is most like writing the history of the town of Market Harborough during the last sixty years. He was born at Catesby, Northamptonshire and came to Market Harborough over sixty years ago to conduct the printing and stationery business in the High street (and subsequently in St Mary's road) which had previously been carried on by his uncle Mr Lawrence, He was already familiar with Market Harborough as he had been to school here, namely at Bowden House, Northampton road, which was at the time a private school.
Having settled in the town permanently Mr Green was very soon in the thick of the social and public events. The nature of his business brought him into contact with a great many people and as he was always willing to help when he could, he very speedily found himself associated with all sorts of things. One of his earliest loves was the Ambulance Brigade- he was the architect of the efficient ambulance service we have in Harborough today. Most of the pioneeering was done by him and at the time when the importance of the work was not so readily or so well recognised as it is now, he had often a hard struggle to get men and money to carry it on. But his resolution never failed and he was hon secretary, treasurer, and superintendent for forty years or more, and when he finally gave up active connection with the Division he left it one of the most efficient and well equipped in the neighbourhood.
He ever retained an interest in the Division and was treasurer until his death. It was appropriate that he should have just recently unveiled a tablet to the memory of the late Cat CR Knighton, who he had himself inspired with enthusiasm for the work, who was his successor as superintendent, and who carried on the traditions of the Brigade up to his death. Mr Green was an Honorary Serving Brother of the Order of St John of Jerusalem.
Mr Green took his share in the local government of the town. He became a member of the Local Board in 1889 and continued a member of that body and it's successor, the Urban District Council, until 1904, a period of fifteen years, during which time he served on all the committees and was chairman of several. It is interesting to recall that at the time when Mr Green became a member of the Board the meetings were held in the Corn Exchange. It's staff consisted of a part time clerk and a part time surveyor, who was also inspector of nuisances, and the rate collection was also done by part time officers, one for each of the parishes of Harborough, Great Bowden and Little Bowden.
Mr Green relinquished his place on the Urban Council when in 1904 he was elected to represent Market Harborough on the Leicestershire County Council. It was on this body that some of his most important work was done, for he had an unbroken connection with it until his death. For 34 years he served his town and county in this regard and some seventeen years ago he was made an Alderman. He served on most of the committees but his chief one was the Roads and Bridges, of which he held the position of Chairman. Just lately Mr Green had been unable to attend the meetings of the Council, but he still retained his interest and the members of the Council, especially the older ones who had worked with him for so long, also retained their interest and affection for him. He will be long remembered for his County Council work.
Another important body upon which Mr Green served with distinction was the Market Harborough Town Estate Trustees. This is essentially a Market Harborough matter both in purpose and administration, and Mr Green's intimate local knowledge was especially valuable in regard to it. He wax the oldest of the trustees and invariably was chairman of their meetings.
He was also chairman of the Directors of the Market Harborough Assembly Rooms Company Ltd and a member of the Old Age Pensioners Committee to both of which he gave regular service.
He was a churchman, and one, moreover who took a great interest in his parish church. For over 25 years he was Vicar's warden and he retired during the incumbency of the Rev HJT Eacott, who is now Rector of Kibworth.
He was a Governor of Market Harborough Grammar School and for 25 years was chairman of that body.
Mr Green always took an interest in young people and when the YMFS Institute on the Coventry Road was established, he became it's first member. He was one of the original trustees of the institute, but it is remarkable in view of his age and his great length of service that he is still survived by another of the original trustees, namely Mr EF Jeffries.
Mr Green was fond of sport and in his early days in Market Harborough played cricket with the Town club.
He was also a member of the old M Company volunteers.
An important feature of Mr Green's work was one which did not come much into the public eye, namely his connection with Freemasonry. He was the senior member of St Peter's Lodge at Market Harborough and had been Master of the Lodge twice, namely in 1891 and 1911. He was secretary of the Lodge for 37 years and resigned that position only two years ago. He held the provincial rank of Senior Warden which was given him as far back as 1897 and in fact he was the oldest warden in the province of Leicestershire and Rutland. He represented his Lodge on the various charities and associated himself with every department of his work. It is not too much to say that outside his own family the people who will miss him most are the Freemasons with whom he had such a long and close association.
As a magistrate Mr Green served with distinction. He was made a magistrate in 1908 and regularly attended the meetings of the Market Harborough Bench. Since Lt Col Petre retired a year or so ago, he had been chairman.
The Market Harborough Building Society was another great work of Mr Green's - he had 53 years connection with it and saw it grow from a society with a comparatively small capital one with a capital of a million and a quarter pounds. Mr Green was president of the Society and as recently as Friday last was reelected to that position.
Mr Green was also a member of the Market Harborough Hospital Committee and a governor of Leicester Royal Infirmary.
There are probably many other matters with which Mr Green was connected, but the references above are sufficient to show what a wonderful work he must have done for the town of his adoption. That work has been recognised by several public references already, and there will be others but the work itself is what will speak best in his memory. It may truly be said of him that he was one of those public spirited men who serve their day and generation with no hope of further rewardthan the satisfaction of feeling that they have at any rate tried to do something for the betterment and happiness of the community.
The funeral is taking place this Friday afternoon, the service being at the parish church at 2.30.
